A living room infused with color, pattern and art
This multi-functional room includes both a cozy nook for TV watching, as well as space for reading and playing games. Plenty of open floor space for kid play time was also important, as well as lots of closed toy storage.
The room was also updated with beautiful engineered hardwood floors, crown molding and built-in bookcases.
Design Notes
-
Functional Needs
-watching TV, kid play-time (legos, trains, puzzles, fort-building, etc.), reading, hosting family/friends
-Storage for kid toys
-Book storage
-
Challenges
-long, fairly narrow room with 2 large pass through openings that lead to kitchen and entry-way
-Fairly low ceilings
-Existing carpet was white and very plush, difficult to keep clean with 2 young kids
-
Solutions
-Divided space into 2 separate areas, one for TV viewing and the other for hosting/reading
-Maintained open space in middle of room for kid play, while still keeping space cozy
-Added architectural interest including crown molding and built in bookcases with toy storage below and book storage above
-Hung curtains high and wide to give the illusion of higher ceilings
-Replaced carpeting with beautiful medium toned oak wood floors, added an easy to clean wool rug
